Everything else is an unofficial mod and therefore holds no authority.

There is only one authoritative incarnation of a game: the original release, patched by the devs. Please note that no mod takes authority over the original vanilla game, patched by the devs absolutely no mod, even if the original devs give the mod their blessing/stamp of approval. So yeah, three extremely valuable utilities for the Infinity Engine modding community, right there. That said, I do know of a couple of Infinity Engine utilities with which I have some experience and without which many of my fave mods would not have existed or perhaps not be as good or as user-friendly they are: WeiDu by Westley Weimer, Near Infinity by Jon Olav Hauglid and DLTCEP by aVENGER.

I believe the authors of these utilities do not receive the credit that they deserve, because, you know, it's a utility that players don't really deal with directly: we just download the mod and install it, unthinking of how it was made possible. I'm not much of a modder myself, unfortunately otherwise, I would have liked to rank modding utilities that allowed for modding to be possible in the first place or at least so easy that even a monkey can now mod. I will be taking such modders to task when I cover the other categories. Of course, I will mention the current, up-to-date incarnation of the mod in parenthesis if I deem it to be the better choice but it isn't always the case because some mods get too big for their own good, others make questionable changes that assume dev intent, and others still are ego-driven. Second, my ranking order is historically slanted: I give greater weight to a mod that has laid down a foundation than I do to a mod that merely built upon it. While no one makes a mod in a vacuum there is just something special about one person going "all out" on their favorite game.

Of course, my ranking is subjective and not everyone shares the same taste: First, I give greater weight to mods made by individuals than I do to mods made by armies, regardless of how coherent and fully realized the outcome of the latter may be. I intend to cover content mods, UI mods, visual mods and TCMs, too (Total Conversion Mods). The next part will cover tactics mods, and the third part will likely cover grand restorations/game-play overhauls. The mods in this series of posts are ranked in categories due to the amount of great mods that are available to the community - and for free! This first part covers forensic bugfixes only. Hi guys! And welcome to the first part of my Best RPG mods series of posts.
